What Size Stove Do I Need? A Guide for Irish Homes

One of the first things to work out when choosing a stove is how much heat your room actually needs.

Stove output is measured in kilowatts (kW). Too little output and the stove may struggle to heat the room comfortably. Too much and you could end up with a room that is far warmer than you need.

Room size gives you a useful starting point, and you only need three measurements to get an approximate figure.

How to Work Out the Stove Size You Need

Measure the length, width and height of the room in metres.

Multiply the three figures together to get the volume of the room in cubic metres (m³).

Then divide the total by 14.

Length × width × height ÷ 14 = approximate stove output in kW

The 14m³ per kW calculation is commonly used as a rough guide for a reasonably insulated room. It should not be treated as an exact measurement, as the amount of heat a room needs will also depend on the property itself.

An Example

Take a room measuring:

  • 7 metres long

  • 4 metres wide

  • 2.5 metres high

First calculate the volume:

7 × 4 × 2.5 = 70m³

Then divide by 14:

70 ÷ 14 = 5kW

A stove with an output of around 5kW would therefore be a sensible starting point when looking at options for a room of this size.

What Else Affects the Size of Stove You Need?

Two rooms with exactly the same dimensions can have very different heating requirements.

An older property that loses heat quickly may need more heat than a modern, well-insulated home of the same size. Large windows, high ceilings and the number of external walls can also make a difference.

Think about:

  • Insulation: A well-insulated room will retain heat for longer.

  • Windows and glazing: Large areas of glazing can increase heat loss.

  • Ceiling height: Higher ceilings mean there is a greater volume of air to heat.

  • External walls: Rooms with several external walls can lose heat more quickly.

  • Open-plan spaces: If there is no door separating your sitting room from a kitchen, dining area or hallway, the stove may effectively be heating a much larger space.

This is why the calculation is best used to narrow down the size you are looking for. The final choice should take the room and the property into account.

What Does That Look Like When Choosing a Stove?

Once you know roughly how much output you need, comparing stoves becomes much easier.

Around 5kW: Henley Muckross Eco 4.6kW

The Henley Muckross Eco 4.6kW sits close to the 5kW mark and is a useful example if your room calculation comes out at around this level.

It is a multi-fuel stove with a traditional cast-iron design, making it an option worth considering for rooms that do not require a high heat output.

What About Larger Rooms?

For a large sitting room, high ceilings or an open-plan space, your calculation may take you into the 10kW to 12kW range or above.

At this point, it is particularly important not to choose purely on room volume. How the space is laid out, how well the property is insulated and how much heat is lost through windows and external walls all need to be considered.

Is a Bigger Stove Better?

Not necessarily.

It can be tempting to choose a more powerful stove just in case you need the extra heat, but the aim should be to match the stove as closely as possible to the room.

A stove that is too small may struggle to provide the heat you want. An oversized stove can make the room uncomfortably warm and may not be used in the way it was designed to operate.

Getting the output right means choosing a stove that suits the space rather than simply choosing the largest model available.

Wood-Burning or Multi-Fuel?

Once you have a good idea of the output you need, another decision is whether you want a dedicated wood-burning stove or a multi-fuel model.

A wood-burning stove is designed specifically for burning wood.

A multi-fuel stove is designed to accommodate wood along with other suitable approved fuels. Its internal grate and airflow are designed differently so that different fuel types can burn correctly.

Which one suits you will depend largely on what you intend to burn, so it is worth deciding this before settling on a particular stove.
